Winter Maintenance
Mailbox Damage During Snow Plowing Operations
The Township’s Public Works Department continually strives to perform snow removal in a safe and efficient manner. During winter maintenance, snow and ice thrown from plows can occasionally damage mailboxes and posts.
Mailboxes that are not properly installed, have deteriorated, or are unable to withstand the force of snow from regular plowing operations are more likely to be damaged. These boxes are the responsibility of the property owner and will not be repaired or replaced by the Township.
Only mailboxes or posts that show clear evidence of being physically struck by a plow or plow wing may be repaired or replaced by the Township, provided they were in good condition and compliant with installation standards before the incident occurred.
- If a mailbox is bent, the Township will attempt to straighten it.
- If a mailbox is beyond repair, a replacement will be provided.
- If a post in good condition is struck and damaged, it will be replaced. Posts that are old, rotten, or unstable prior to the incident will not be replaced.
The Township is not responsible for mailboxes or posts damaged by:
- Snow or ice being thrown from plows during normal operations;
- Improperly installed or non-compliant mailboxes;
- Weak, deteriorated, or unstable posts; or
- Acts of vandalism.
Residents are reminded that mailboxes must comply with Canada Post’s Rural Mailbox Guidelines and Township By-law 23-67: Schedule "A" Mailbox Policy. Proper installation, sturdy materials, and correct placement help ensure mail delivery and reduce the risk of damage during snow clearing.
On a County road, the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville is responsible for plowing and mailbox repair or replacement and should be contacted directly should this occur.
