Discussion on the Alto High-Speed Rail Project

Residents are advised that the federal government is currently advancing plans for the proposed Alto High-Speed Rail Project, a new passenger rail network intended to connect major cities between Toronto and Québec City.

The project proposes approximately 1,000 km of primarily dedicated, electrified rail infrastructure designed to support high-speed passenger trains travelling up to 300 km/h. Proposed stops along the corridor include Peterborough, Ottawa, Montréal, Laval, and Trois-Rivières.

The Township of Elizabethtown-Kitley is largely outside the currently proposed high-speed rail corridor, though the northern portion of the Township falls within the study area. Council will continue to monitor the project to understand potential regional impacts.

The Government of Canada and project partners are currently undertaking planning, technical studies, and public consultation as part of the project’s development. Additional information about the project and its current status can be found here: https://www.altotrain.ca/en/about-alto/whats-happening

Council Direction:

Council has directed staff to prepare a report on the proposed high‑speed rail project, including potential implications for the Township. This report will be presented at a future Council meeting prior to the close of the federal consultation period on April 24th, 2026.

The date of the meeting will be shared once confirmed, and residents will be welcome to attend or follow the discussion through the Township’s YouTube channel.

Public Consultation & Feedback:

Residents who wish to learn more about the project or provide feedback can do so directly through the Alto public consultation website:
